Fertilizing Your Zoysia Lawn: Granular vs. Water Soluble Fertilizers

posted on July 14th, 2010 by

There are many different types of fertilizers that claim to help nourish your lawn. With all the options that are out there, it is difficult to know which is right for your lawn. You should be aware of what kind of fertilizer is right for an Amazoy zoysia lawn.

Granular Fertilizers

Granular fertilizers are probably the type of fertilizer you are most familiar with. While these are most common and popular with homeowners, they are not best for your zoysia lawn.

Granular fertilizers tend to simply sit on the surface of grass, causing burns that could damage your plugs. The nutrients never reach the roots, where they are most needed.

Water Soluble Fertilizers

Water Soluble Fertilizers allow for the fertilizer to dissolve in the water, which takes the nutrients directly to the roots. This provides your grass with vital food elements that help it grow to become lush and healthy.

Read more about our own fertilizer, Nutri-20, and how to apply it.

New green shoots should start to appear in 30 to 45 days. Water lightly for the first 21 days only. Good luck!

It took over a month for mine to go Green. The process was weird. After I planted the plugs all of the grass fell off. Almost like it was shedding. I thought all of my plugs were completely dead. Then, new green started sprouting from underneath. My my grass is doing great!!! I didn’t buy nutri-20 though. I bought another “water-soluable” fertizer online for half the price…

One thing I had a problem w/ was grubs. Apparently I had grubs and didn’t know it. What happened was birds were ripping apart my lawn trying to get to the grubs. They were also ripping apart my plugs in the process. I would come out every morning and find 10 plugs laying in the ground. After I put down some grub killer, the birds left my lawn alone and I was good to go…

Looking forward to how it’s going to look next year when it starts to fill in.

    Thanks, SN!
I planted a lot of plugs and freaked out when birds moved them and took some away. I never thought of grubs. I have those darn worms in my trees, coming down on their webs. I bet there are grubs, too.
Thanks, SN, you’ve given me some ideas.

I’m impressed, I have to admit. Rarely do I come across a blog that’s equally educative and amusing, and let me tell
you, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The problem is something which not enough men and women are speaking intelligently about.

Now i’m very happy I found this during my search for something
    regarding this.

Does water-soluble mean you use a sprayer to apply it, or does it just dissolve with watering?

Water soluble means mixing and applying with water. Often times the product is in a powder form and you mix it with water and then apply. A water soluble fertilizer is less likely to burn your lawn than granular fertilizers.
