Hi Ken,
I'm not real familiar with the Emerald zoysia, but pine trees can alter the pH level of your soil which can affect the performance of the grass. We suggest the soil pH be between 6 an 7 for the best results. You may also want to check and make sure the area under the pine trees is receiving enought sunlight each day.

Hi Larry,
If your zoysia is a well established lawn, it sounds like you could be getting a thatch build up. If you have not dethatch your lawn the thatch will slowly start to choke out the zoysia, making the grass thin, brown and allowing weeds to grow. The thatch should be raked out each spring when the grass first greens up to prevent a build up. We also carry a liguid thatch remover in our organic products you may want to check out.

I live in Dallas, Georgia. Last year my zoysia was beautiful. This year it looks thin and spotty, with many areas looking brown. I fertalized it like normal in April, but it just hasn't come back like last year. Over the winter we has abnormal amounts of rain and I wonder if that has affected it. Help!

Hi Rick,
If the areas have a thatch build up, that can affect the performance of the grass and could cause it to thin out. You may also want to check and make sure you do not have an insect problem. Insects such as grubs, nemotades, chinch bugs or mole crickets eat the roots of lawn grasses and can destroy them. We only sell the Meyers Amazoy zoysia grass, I would suggest that you contact someone who deals with the Empire grass for the proper maintenance for Empire zoysia. I"m sorry I am not familiar with the liquid gold product.

Hi Cathy,
If the grass is zoysia grass it will repair itself. If you check and see what type of zoysia grass you have you may want to consider planting plugs in the areas, if the patches are a fair size. Before you apply anything to your lawn it is best to check the label of the product and be sure it is safe for zoysia grass.

I live in Orlando, and installed empire zoysia sod in my backyard 2 summers ago. Last year, I did so in my front yard. Both areas have a section about 4x8 that has grown very thin and brown - just not getting much growth. Other sections are more or less healthy looking. I raked out a fair amount of thatch a couple of weeks ago. Was wondering if aeration might be needed. I'm afraid these sections will keep declining. Because they look so poor, I've been inclined to water them more than I normally would. Is that a bad idea? Also, wondered about products like "liquid gold", or or similar products?

I think we have this same grass in the house we recently bought. Most of the lawn has come back green but there are some brown patches were my husband sprayed weed killer.Do I need to do anything to these patches or will the grass just replenish itself over time?

Hello Kako,
I am sorry to hear your entire zoysia lawn has died. Raking up the dead grass is the correct start to repairing your lawn. There has to be a reason for an entire lawn to die if nothing was applied to the lawn that would harm the zoysia grass. There are also many different types of zoysia grass, not knowing what type you have makes it difficult to try and help with the problem. Please do not cover the grass with topsoil. I do not know anything about the concoction you were told to apply. We will be happy to assist you in trying to determine just what happened to your lawn if you contact our Customer Service Department at 410-756-2311.

I live in Jacksonville, Florida and I also have Zoysia turf. I'm concerned because the grass is dead. My husband and I raked the old grass and I feel there is some hope. Although there is no color of green and the grass is completely brown except for the edges and some parts of the grass....most of the dead grass is deeply rooted and not easy to rake up. So...I was told to rake the old/dead grass up/put top soin over the dead grass and shallow spots/and put the concoction of listerine, coke, amonia, dish detergent and beer with a sprayer hooked to the hose. I'm in dire need of help. It was around this time last year when we've took the step to re-sod from St Augustine to Zoysia. The grass was absolutely healthy last year and I loved how the turf has the "carpet effect" Please help me!!! Thanks, Kako
