Darrell - Zoysia works great in Texas there are some basic planting guide lines you should follow while the grass is getting established. First on that list is water lightly once a day for the first 3 weeks. After the grass is established you can back this off to a few times a month. When laying sod, the ground needs to be tilled at minimum to 6 inches deep. This helps he sod get good contact between the soil and the roots.

You can try plugs instead of sod. Plugs are a great alternative because they are much less expensive and are more likely to succeed because they are planted in the ground.
