One of the biggest decisions in starting or switching your lawn to a zoysia lawn is deciding on which method to use. There are several different ways to start your new lawn. The most common ways are plugs, seeds or sod.
I will be going over some of the advantages and disadvantages for the different planting methods to start a zoysia lawn. Let’s start with plugs. Part Two (Next Week) we will go over seeds and sod.
Freestyle Plugs – You choose the size plug to cut
Advantages
- Most cost efficient
- Ability to choose what size plugs to cut (anywhere from a 1 inch plug to a 3 inch plug)
- Most economical way to cover large areas
- Can be planted in an established lawn or bare soil
- Disadvantages
- More labor intense
- Plugs have to be separated using a sharp cutting tool
- Must make a hole in soil to place the plug in
- Longer to fill in
- New 3 inch by 3 inch plug
- Advantages
- Plugs are pre-cut
- Ready to plant
- Less time to plant
- Can be planted in an established lawn or bare soil
- Needs less watering
- Disadvantages
- More expensive
- Best used for smaller areas
- Must make a hole in soil to place the plug in
