Methods to Start or Switch to a Zoysia Lawn – Part One

One of the biggest decisions in starting or switching your lawn to a zoysia lawn is deciding on which method to use.   There are several different ways to start your new lawn. The most common ways are plugs, seeds or sod.

I will be going over some of the advantages and disadvantages for the different planting methods to start a zoysia lawn. Let’s start with plugs. Part Two (Next Week) we will go over seeds and sod.

Advantages

  • Most cost efficient
  • Ability to choose what size plugs to cut (anywhere from a 1 inch plug to a 3 inch plug)
  • Most economical way to cover large areas
  • Can be planted in an established lawn or bare soil
  • Needs less wateringSod
  • Disadvantages

 

  • More labor intense
  • Plugs have to be separated using a sharp cutting tool
  • Must make a hole in soil to place the plug in
  • Longer to fill in  
  • New 3 inch by 3 inch plug
  • Advantages
